『Though We Do Not Know Where We Are Going』
Ham Mina reminds me of a solitary boat. The boat stops somewhere and then sails again, as if it has no set destination. We do not know when or where the boat will stop. It is even more difficult to know what reasons cause the anchor drop between the swirling waves and the subdued deep ocean. We merely jump into the painting at the location where the anchor has been dropped somewhere in the memories and the experiences of the artist and we start to dive.
Vague images of children running with dark landscapes at their backs, a boy who is turned away looking at the gray horizon, a girl in a somewhat unfamiliar and exotic forest, and sea swaying with golden light. These are all far removed from anything that can be classified by numbers and records. The people are difficult to identify by nationality or origin, and they are not tied down to any specific place. If we look carefully, we can see that such nomadic-sedentary allegories are repeated throughout her work. Most of the people in the canvases of Ham do not look straight ahead. They slide by the audience outside of the image through a perspective that veers away a little, in a way that is a bit warped and twisted. The paintings of Ham are based on actual reality, that is, the innate memories and subjective experiences of the artist, and a specific moment that was floating in the immense and slow-moving time of Ham is captured and placed in the image. The starting point for such a flowing perspective overlaps with the personal experiences of the artist. From the words of the artist stating that she often encountered those who voyaged the seas while she lived near the ocean in Busan and the East Sea during her youth, we can see the simultaneous action of the memories of wandering (nomadism) and longing (sedentarism). The reason that mainly children appear in her works can also be seen as an allegory wherein the identity that has not yet settled (nomadism) intersects with a subject who wishes to return to an old memory (sedentarism).
These are the reasons why the record of the artist navigating life becomes an important benchmark for the audience. She fishes for memories in time as if she were fishing for specific senses, and we make a map by collecting the record of the anchor drops made by Ham. This is because we often swell and surge between chaotic wandering and context-less settling.
Even if we do not know where the wandering memories of Ham Mina are going, we must keep an observant eye on where she drops anchor, even if that place is inside a comfortable and warm memory or in the midst of a distant and uncomfortable memory. We must allow the perspective of the artist, which has been honed through the repeated washing and rinsing by the tides of time, to be a furtive tool to reflect on oneself. It is then that the records of the anchor are revealed, and the waving compass can be fixed using her memories as a guide.
